Sattal or Sat Tal in Hindi for “seven lakes”, is an interconnected group of seven freshwater lakes situated in the lower Himalayan Range near Bhimtal, a town of the Nainital district in Uttarakhand, India . During the British Raj, the area had a tea plantation, one of four in the Kumaon area at that time. The lakes sit at an altitude of 1370 metres below lush orchards in the Mehragaon valley. Set amongst dense forests of oak and pine trees, Sattal is one of the few unspoiled and unpolluted freshwater biomes in India. These lakes are a paradise for migratory birds. It is home to a few camps being operated mostly by local people catering to tourists looking for outdoor vacations.

WHAT YOU LEARN

Nainital, Sattal and Chopta has enough avian wonders to keep one busy. With great guide and a photography expert, you are sure to come back with some amazing keepers.

Birding haven of India

Sattal & Chopta

Nestled in the Kumaon region at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas are these bird-dense places called Sattal and Chopta. Sattal to be specific is situated in the most pristine biomes in Asia, thus making it a favourite spot for more than 300 species of Himalayan birds, most of which are migratory.
The fresh water lakes and the many millions of pine and oak trees make it easy for the birds to hang-out pose and get clicked by photographers.

Chopta valley has been endowed with unparallel amazing natural beauty all around as far as your sight goes which is main attraction among tourists worldwide. Wide spread lush green meadows and gentles slopes of huge mountains ornamented with Oak Pine and birch trees, innumerable species of rare flowers and herbs, chirping of birds, rushing and gushing of many water streams making beautiful water fountains on their way and presence of the splendid Gangotri greater Himalayan range mix a overwhelming fragrance in the whole atmosphere of Chopta. Sun rise and Sun set view from Chopta is an unforgettable event especially from Chandrashila peak in winters. View of The Greater Himalaya from an ideal distance is one of major attractions which inspire tourists to visit Chopta frequently.
