A heaven for birders and bird photographers. Come winter, this place is dressed in magical light pretty much all through the day. With scores of migratory birds having landed, the marshes and the water bodies full, this place makes for a wonderful setting for bird photography. The sunrise and sunsets are beautiful too and give amazing opportunities for the creative mind to make some stunning images.

WHAT YOU LEARN

A great opportunity to observe, learn about and photograph the vast variety of migratory birds in a fabulous setting. You will understand the nuances of wildlife photography. How best to use the available light to create high impact images. How to position yourself properly and wait for the right moment rather than go trigger happy. A lot of interactions on the field and off it regarding compositions and post processing will help you to up your photography skills many notches.

Keoladeo National Park

Birding bliss

Keoladeo Ghana National Park which is popularly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is situated in the state of Rajasthan. It was declared a World heritage Site and according to WWF founder Peter Scott, is the best protected bird sanctuary in the world. This 30 sq.kms birding paradise is a mosaic of dry grasslands, woodland swamps and wetlands.

These diverse habitats make Bharatpur a home to 366 bird species, 379 floral species, 13 species of snakes, 7 turtle species and a variety of other invertebrates. But what really makes Bharatpur special is that every year thousands of migratory waterfowls and rare Siberian cranes visit Keoladeo, giving bird lovers and photo-enthusiasts a one-of-a-kind opportunity to observe and experience the beauty of these rare birds from close quarters.

This tour is planned in such a way that you will be exposed to the natural history of the birds of Bharatpur while parallely getting to learn and experiment with the art of bird photography. We will also be having hour-long theoretical sessions about the basics of photography so as to give you a heads up on how to make great bird pictures while on the field. To sum it up, Birdwing’s tour of Bharatpur is a simple and practical wildlife photography learning session for bird lovers.

itinerary
Feb 15th – 18th 2018 ( 3N/4D)
  • Day 1-2 – Feb 15th (Thu) – Feb 18th (Fri)

    Day 1: Feb 15th (Thursday)

Tour participants from various places assemble in Delhi/Jaipur and at around 9 am, we will leave for Bharatpur. After a two hour drive, we’ll arrive at the lodge and check-in. We can arrange cab for you to reach from Delhi or Jaipur at extra cost.

The skipper will follow up lunch with a quick ice breaker and an orientation session. After packing our equipment, we’ll arrive at the park for our first encounter with the park’s habitat and diversity. You’ll learn how to create images with variations of light and natural history of the subjects that you photograph.

Once we’re back, we’ll review each other’s images while sipping some hot tea. We’ll also exchange some tips and tricks on photography, which’ll help us next day.

    Day 2: Feb 16th (Friday)

After a hot tea on this misty morning, we’ll enter the park in a cycle rickshaw. This’ll be hopefully our most productive day at the park, as we’ll exit only after sunset. Our first target will be to create images with the morning sun. We’ll spend the rest of our day photographing the winged beauties of Bharatpur, alternating between portraits and action shots.

Midday, we’ll assemble at a resting place to enjoy a finger licking lunch inside the park. Once we’ve taken a cat nap, we can continue on our days’ work. We’ll photograph until sundown, but that’s not all. Bharatpur sunsets are dramatic as the clouds create a myriad of hues in the sky giving you ample room for creativity.

After what should be a tiring but productive day, we’ll assemble at our lodge for tea. We’ll discuss the day’s sightings as we review the images and once we’re done with dinner, we’ll tuck ourselves into bed.

  • Day 3-4 – Feb 17th (Sat) – Feb 18th (Sun)

    Day 3: Feb 17th (Saturday)

We will start early and leave for Chambal. It’s a two hour drive from Bharatpur and we plan to be there at sunrise. Our naturalist will give us a quick orientation about the habitat and then, we’ll use our time to photograph the wildlife around this river. A boat ride at this place offers different perspective to shoot the subjects. We’ll depart to the lodge just after sundown and get there in time for dinner.

    Day 4: Feb 18th (Sunday)

This is our last day; we enter the park for one final round of birding and photography. The aim is to try to exhaust the last few bytes in our memory cards! After our morning session, we’ll assemble at the lodge for a sumptuous breakfast while we discuss and revisit our sightings and memorable events of our journey from the past four days. Once we’ve got a group picture, we’ll depart to Delhi airport/ railway station to end the tour. We’ll head our separate ways until Birdwing brings us together again.
